Choosing the Right Toggle Switch

• single pole single throw, SPST, on/off switch
• single pole double throw, SPDT, on/off/on switch
• double pole double throw, DPDT, two circuit on/off/on switch

A single message sign like this #38637 X-RAY IN USE sign, can be controlled with a #3040 Single Pole Single Throw (SPST ON/OFF) switch.

The X-RAY IN USE message illuminates when the switch is in the up position and no message illuminates when the switch is in the center position.

A two message sign like this #5887 OPEN|CLOSED sign, can be controlled with a #3039 Single Pole Double Throw (SPDT ON/OFF/ON) switch.

The OPEN message illuminates when the switch is in the up position; no message illuminates when the switch is in the center position and the CLOSED message illuminates when the switch is in the down position.

A two message sign with a shared overlaid message like this #5259 COMMERICAL OPEN | COMMERICAL CLOSED sign can be controlled with a #33007 Double Pole Double Throw (DPDT two-circuit on/off/on) switch.

COMMERICAL can be illuminated with both the OPEN and CLOSED messages or illuminated with only the OPEN message while the CLOSED message illuminates separately.)
